Calterra Secures £96,000 Grant to Advance AI-Driven Habitat Monitoring
Calterra has pulled a £96,000 SMART grant from Scottish Enterprise to extend its AI-driven monitoring stack from pre-restoration planning into long-term habitat verification, according to reporting from The Herald.

The 14-month R&D cycle targets peatlands and woodlands already under restoration — a gap most MRV vendors still leave open. For climate tech founders, the structure matters more than the headline number: non-dilutive grant + accelerator slot + defined regulatory anchor.
The grant mechanics
The funding profile is tight and bounded:

Calterra is a joint venture between New Gradient, an Edinburgh AI consultancy, and Caledonian Climate. The technical stack pairs AI with Earth observation data. To date the work has concentrated upstream — mapping land, flagging intervention zones. The new project shifts the bottleneck downstream: post-restoration outcome verification, the part where capital providers and regulators ask for evidence rather than promises.
The regulatory pull is concrete. Scotland's Climate Change Plan targets more than 400,000 hectares of peatland restored by 2040, with a proposed Peatland Standard intended to standardise monitoring and verification. Ewan McMillan, founder and managing director of New Gradient, framed the unit economics in plain terms: tracking habitat health more frequently, more accurately and at a lower cost — giving buyers of carbon and biodiversity credits higher confidence that restoration actually delivers.
The scaling stack
Grant money buys runway. The accelerator slot buys distribution. Calterra has been selected for Cohort 10 of the University of Edinburgh's AI Accelerator, delivered with Edinburgh Innovations. The programme runs since 2019, has supported more than 100 companies, and offers three operational inputs founders typically have to stitch together themselves:

Stacking a small regional grant with a tier-2 university accelerator is a reproducible pattern for UK climate tech founders at the seed-to-Series-A transition. It converts a slow pilot into a measurable product line tied to a named policy target.
