Defra Partners with Geovation to Accelerate ClimateTech Land-Use Innovation
The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is now funding three slots in the Geovation Accelerator's autumn cohort, according to Ordnance Survey.

The move connects a government land-use mandate to a public-data startup pipeline already running through OS and HM Land Registry. For climate tech founders operating in geospatial or land-use plays, the unit economics just shifted: £20,000 per team, equity-free, with a direct procurement pathway attached.
Funding and Support Stack
The base structure: three startups per cohort. Each receives up to £20,000 equity-free. The support layer is fixed — targeted workshops, one-to-one mentoring, and technical sessions delivered by the Geovation team. Curriculum covers customer development, technology, business models, intellectual property, team building, and funding readiness. Participants also tap the wider partner and investor ecosystem.
Defra adds a specialized stream. The three land-use startups will receive additional mentoring from Satellite Applications Catapult (SAC), specifically for pilot matchmaking and procurement readiness. This is a direct response to the department's Land Use Framework, which calls for geospatial data tools in the hands of decision-makers. Track Record and Operational Throughput
Geovation has run as an Ordnance Survey initiative in association with HM Land Registry. The Defra entry expands the data perimeter to environmental and land-use datasets. Cohort focus: land use innovation through location, property, and Earth Observation data — applied across housing, infrastructure, energy, food production, and nature recovery.
The throughput is documented. Land App, founded by fourth-generation farmer Tim Hopkin, entered the inaugural 2015 programme. Ten years on, the platform maps 80% of England's agricultural land. Oko Ag is among the most recent cohort entries. More than a dozen startups using data in land use and management have already passed through the Accelerator.
Operational Parameters for Applicants
If a startup fits these constraints, the funnel is open:
1. Data layer: location, property, or Earth Observation as primary input.
2. End user: land-use decision-makers across public or private sectors.
3. Vertical fit: housing, infrastructure, energy, food production, or nature recovery.
4. Stage: pre-seed or seed with a working prototype.
5. Geography: UK-based, or operating within UK regulatory environment.
Binary Checklist
Before applying, confirm:
- Does the product use geospatial or EO data as a primary input? Yes / No
- Is land use the primary vertical, not an adjacent one? Yes / No
- Can the team meet procurement-readiness milestones? Yes / No
- Will £20,000 cover 3–6 months of runway without dilution? Yes / No
Any No answer disqualifies the cohort. All Yes means the application window is the next bottleneck.
