The recognition landed at Nucleate Global Summit 2026 outside Dallas, and the most interesting part isn't the trophy — it's the methodology. If you're building a climate venture out of a lab bench, the way this list was built tells you exactly what to look for in your own accelerator.

What actually earned the ranking

TIME built the list in partnership with data firm Statista, evaluating thousands of programs across the country. Here's the part worth screenshotting: 85% of each program's score came from a survey of more than 2,000 founders who went through incubators and accelerators between 2020 and 2025. The remaining 15% reflected the success of each program's top startups, plus recommendations from investors and seasoned operators.

Co-founder and Executive Director Oliver Dodd framed the recognition as validation from the people Nucleate serves. The Activator, the program's flagship, is free for participants and takes no equity. It pairs early-career scientists with co-founders, mentors them through a structured curriculum, and walks them from research project to company.

The model climate founders should be benchmarking

The 2026 Activator cohort was the most competitive in the organization's history — 180 teams selected from more than 2,200 applicants across over 400 academic institutions, supported by 600 industry experts matched to teams by field. Since inception, the program has helped start over 300 companies that have raised $810 million in follow-on funding and created more than 1,000 jobs.

Three pieces of that model deserve your attention:

  • No equity, no barrier. A free program that doesn't take a stake removes the founder-unfriendly economics that quietly hollows out early-stage accelerators. Ask any climate accelerator you're considering whether they take equity, and what that means for your cap table five years out.

  • Co-founder matching. Many climate ventures die not because the science is weak, but because a single technical founder can't find a commercial co-founder. Programs that solve this concretely save you months.
